The Small Business Guide to Working With a Social Media Agency

The Small Business Guide to Working With a Social Media Agency - Social Media Strategy guide by Compelite Pro

Hiring a social media agency is a big decision for a small business. It's an investment of money and trust. Get it right and it transforms your marketing. Get it wrong and you've wasted months and budget.

What a Good Agency Should Offer

  • Strategy first - Any agency worth their fee will start with strategy, not posting. If they jump straight to "how many posts do you want?" - run.
  • Clear reporting - You should receive monthly reports with metrics that tie back to business goals, not just vanity numbers.
  • Proactive communication - You shouldn't have to chase your agency. Regular check-ins and updates should be standard.
  • Content approval process - You should see and approve content before it goes live, at least initially.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Guaranteeing specific follower numbers
  • Refusing to share their strategy or reasoning
  • Long lock-in contracts (more than 3 months initially)
  • No case studies or references
  • One-size-fits-all packages with no customisation

Questions to Ask Before Signing

  1. What does the first 30 days look like?
  2. How do you measure success?
  3. Can I speak to a current client?
  4. What's your content creation process?
  5. How do you handle negative comments or a PR issue?

The right agency feels like an extension of your team, not a vendor you barely hear from.

Four Years with Halcyan Water Conditioners - A Partnership Built on Results

The Halcyan Heroes - Halcyan Water Conditioners team on their exhibition stand celebrating four years with Compelite Pro

This month marks four years since Halcyan Water Conditioners became a Compelite Pro client - and what a four years it's been.

When Halcyan first came to us in September 2021, the brief was clear but the challenge was bigger than it looked: take a genuinely category-leading product - a chemical-free, salt-free water conditioner with serious environmental credentials - and turn a quiet social presence into a recognisable industry voice. Great engineering, modest visibility. We see this pattern a lot.

Where We Started

In 2021, the social channels were ticking over but not pulling weight. There was no consistent narrative, no content rhythm, and almost nothing that explained why Halcyan's technology mattered to the people who needed it most - homeowners tired of limescale, plumbers and installers looking for a reliable referral product, and commercial buyers under pressure to reduce chemical use.

Our starting point wasn't more posts. It was a clearer story.

What We Built Together

Over four years, we've helped Halcyan develop:

  • A confident, expert-led brand voice across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube - one that educates first and sells second.
  • A consistent content engine covering product education, installer spotlights, customer testimonials, and the science behind the technology.
  • Trade show and event coverage - including the photo above from The Halcyan Heroes on the stand, where the team turned exhibition energy into months of social content.
  • A library of customer stories from across the UK - real homes, real installers, real before-and-afters.
  • Targeted paid campaigns aligned to seasonal buying intent and the markets where hard water is most painful.

What's Changed in Four Years

The numbers matter, but the shift is bigger than vanity metrics. Halcyan is now consistently referenced in industry conversations about sustainable water treatment. Their installer network has grown. Inbound enquiries arrive already half-sold, because the social content has done the educating up front. That's the real job of social done well - it makes every other part of the business easier.

Why the Partnership Has Lasted

Four-year client relationships are rare in our industry. They happen when three things line up: a product worth shouting about, a client team that's genuinely collaborative, and an agency that treats the brand like its own.

Halcyan has all three. Sam, Nick, Josh and the wider team have been brilliant to work with - open with feedback, fast with content, and committed to doing things properly rather than chasing short-term spikes.

What's Next

Year five is already shaping up. We're expanding the content programme into long-form video, deepening the installer marketing track, and rolling out a fresh campaign aimed squarely at the commercial sector. Watch this space.

To Sam, Nick, Josh, the Halcyan team and every Halcyan Hero - thank you for four brilliant years. Here's to the next four.

Instagram's 2026 Algorithm Changes: What Actually Works Now

Instagram's 2026 Algorithm Changes: What Actually Works Now - Social Media Platform Updates guide by Compelite Pro

Instagram has quietly rebalanced its algorithm in early 2026. Reels are still important, but pure short-form video is no longer the auto-win it was in 2023–2024. If your reach has flatlined, here's what's actually changed and what to do about it.

What's Changed

  1. Carousels are back. Multi-slide posts are seeing 1.7x the saves of single Reels for educational content. Saves are now weighted heavier than likes.
  2. DM shares signal harder than ever. A post shared once via DM is worth roughly 8 likes in algorithmic weighting.
  3. Watch-time on Reels is being measured against intent. A 15-second Reel watched fully outperforms a 60-second Reel watched halfway.
  4. Stories are being used as a relevance signal. If your Story viewers don't engage with your feed posts, your feed reach drops.

The 7-Day Action Plan

Day 1 - Audit

Pull your last 30 posts. Sort by saves and shares (not likes). The top 5 are your content blueprint for the next month.

Day 2 - Build a carousel

Take your highest-saving topic and build an 8-slide carousel. Slide 1 is the hook, slides 2–7 are the value, slide 8 is a soft CTA ("save this for later" or "send this to a founder who needs it").

Day 3 - Post one short Reel (under 20 seconds)

Hook in the first 1.5 seconds. No intro. Get to the point.

Day 4 - Reply to every DM and comment

Within 60 minutes if possible. The algorithm tracks responsiveness now.

Day 5 - Post a story poll or question sticker

Engagement on Stories from your active followers boosts your feed reach for 48 hours after.

Day 6 - Re-share your carousel as a Story

Tag yourself, add a "save this" sticker, and link the original post.

Day 7 - Review

Compare reach and saves to your previous week. The number that matters is reach per follower - anything above 35% means the algorithm is showing you to non-followers.

What to Stop Doing

  • Posting daily for the sake of it. Three high-quality posts a week now beats seven mediocre ones.
  • Using more than 5 hashtags. Excess hashtags now correlate with lower reach, not higher.
  • Writing one-line captions. Captions over 150 words consistently outperform short ones.

This Week

Build the carousel from Day 2. That single post will tell you more about your 2026 audience than any analytics dashboard.

How to Write Instagram Captions That Actually Get Engagement

How to Write Instagram Captions That Actually Get Engagement - Social Media Tips guide by Compelite Pro

Instagram captions matter more than most people think. The algorithm doesn't just measure likes - it measures time spent on your post. A compelling caption keeps people reading, and reading signals value.

The Caption Formula

Every high-performing caption follows a simple structure:

  1. Hook - The first line must stop the scroll. Ask a question, make a bold statement, or share a surprising fact.
  2. Story or Value - Expand on the hook with a story, tip, or insight. Be specific, not generic.
  3. Call to Action - Tell people what to do next. Save, share, comment, DM - be explicit.

What Not to Do

Avoid single-emoji captions, generic motivational quotes, and "Happy Friday!" posts. These add no value and the algorithm knows it.

Length Matters

Longer captions consistently outperform shorter ones - as long as the content is engaging. Aim for 150-300 words for educational posts and 50-100 words for lifestyle content.

The businesses seeing the best results on Instagram in 2024 are the ones treating captions like mini blog posts, not afterthoughts.

How to Use Instagram Stories to Drive Sales (Not Just Views)

How to Use Instagram Stories to Drive Sales - Social Media Marketing guide by Compelite Pro

Instagram Stories get 500 million daily users, but most businesses treat them as throwaway content. Posted and forgotten. That's a massive wasted opportunity.

Stories as a Sales Channel

Stories sit at the top of the Instagram app - prime real estate. And because they feel casual and temporary, people watch them with lower defences than feed posts. That makes them perfect for selling.

The Story Sales Framework

1. The Hook Story

Start with something that grabs attention: a bold question, a surprising stat, or a relatable problem. "Did you know 73% of small businesses waste their social media budget?"

2. The Value Slides

Deliver 3-5 slides of genuine value. Tips, insights, or a mini case study. Build trust before asking for anything.

3. The Social Proof

Share a testimonial, a screenshot of a result, or a before-and-after. Show that what you're offering actually works.

4. The CTA

Use the link sticker, a DM prompt, or direct them to your bio. Make the next step crystal clear and easy.

Story Highlights = Evergreen Sales Pages

Organise your best Story sequences into Highlights: "Results," "Services," "FAQs," "Reviews." These become permanent sales pages on your profile that work 24/7.

Welcome Izzy: Joining Compelite Pro as Full-Time Content Creator

Izzy - newly joined full-time Content Creator at Compelite Pro, smiling in the studio

We're thrilled to share some news from inside the studio: Izzy has officially joined Compelite Pro as a full-time Content Creator, starting March 2026.

A Significant Step for Our Studio

Bringing Izzy on full time marks a deliberate investment in the part of our work that clients feel the most - the craft. As demand for premium, on-brand content has grown across our retainers, we wanted a senior creative permanently embedded in the team rather than scaled through freelancers.

What Izzy Will Be Working On

  • On-location shoots for hospitality, retail and service-based clients across Bristol and the South West.
  • Short-form video - Reels, TikToks and Shorts built around each brand's voice and conversion goals.
  • Photography and stills for product launches, founder content and seasonal campaigns.
  • Editorial direction across monthly content calendars, working alongside our strategy team.

Why This Matters for Clients

A full-time, in-house creator means faster turnarounds, deeper brand knowledge and more consistent output across every account. Izzy will be working directly with our strategists and account leads - so creative isn't an afterthought to strategy, it's built into it from day one.

Say Hello

If you're a current client, expect to see Izzy on your next shoot day. If you're considering working with us and want to talk about your content strategy, book a strategy call - we'd love to show you what our expanded team can do.

Welcome to the team, Izzy.

Ecommerce Social Media Strategy: Platform-by-Platform Breakdown

Ecommerce Social Media Strategy: Platform-by-Platform Breakdown - Social Media for Ecommerce guide by Compelite Pro

One of the most common questions ecommerce brands ask us is: "Which platforms should we be on?" The answer depends entirely on what you sell and who you sell it to.

Instagram: The Visual Storefront

Best for: lifestyle, fashion, beauty, food, homeware, and any visually appealing product. Instagram Shopping makes it seamless to tag products and drive purchases directly from posts and Stories.

TikTok: The Discovery Engine

Best for: products under £50 with impulse-buy appeal. TikTok's algorithm surfaces content to people who've never heard of your brand, making it unmatched for discovery. TikTok Shop is growing rapidly.

Facebook: The Retargeting Powerhouse

Best for: retargeting and community building. Facebook Groups create loyal communities, and Facebook Ads remain the most sophisticated retargeting platform available.

Pinterest: The Long Game

Best for: home decor, weddings, fashion, DIY, and aspirational products. Pinterest content has an incredibly long shelf life - pins can drive traffic for months or even years.

LinkedIn: The B2B Marketplace

Best for: B2B products, SaaS, professional services, and high-ticket items. If your customer is a business owner or decision-maker, LinkedIn is where they spend their professional time.

The Rule

Master two platforms before adding a third. Spreading thin across five platforms will always underperform going deep on two.

Why Your Ecommerce Brand Needs UGC (And How to Get It for Free)

Why Your Ecommerce Brand Needs UGC - Social Media Marketing guide by Compelite Pro

If you're running an ecommerce brand and not leveraging user-generated content, you're leaving money on the table. UGC converts 4.5x better than professionally produced brand content.

Why? Because people trust other people more than they trust brands. A real customer photo or video carries more weight than any polished ad campaign.

How to Get UGC Without Paying Creators

You don't need a massive budget. You need a system:

  • Post-purchase emails - Send an automated email 7 days after delivery asking customers to share their experience and tag you
  • Packaging inserts - Include a card with your Instagram handle and a branded hashtag
  • Monthly competitions - "Share a photo with our product for a chance to win next month's order free"
  • Feature your customers - When you repost UGC, other customers want to be featured too
  • Make it easy - Create a branded hashtag and reference it everywhere

How to Use UGC Effectively

Don't just repost it. Strategically integrate UGC into your content calendar:

  • Use it in carousel posts alongside professional shots
  • Feature it in Stories and Highlights
  • Run it as ad creative (with permission) - UGC ads consistently outperform branded ads
  • Add it to product pages on your website

The best ecommerce brands don't just sell products. They build communities of advocates who create content for them.
